Downhole Pressure and Temperature Monitoring System - OCN ExxonMobil, Venezuela
eP Solutions has provided a complete downhole pressure and temperature monitoring and data acquisition system for seven Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) artificial lift system wellpads, each wellpad (cluster) having eighteen wells. The monitoring solutions are installed in the Operadora Cerro Negro (OCN) field (ExxonMobil) in Venezuela.
Each monitoring solution consists of the eP sPOD Digital Sensor that monitors the PCP intake pressure and temperature. All sensor information is processed via a surface control and monitoring system, which processes the proprietary sensor signal, historical logging of the data, and outputs the signal in both an analog current loop for VFD control plus a Modbus channel for additional interfacing.
In addition to the monitoring systems installed at OCN, the same sensor technology was installed for reservoir characterization and performance analysis in two other wells. These completions consisted of seven sPOD sensors installed, six horizontally over an 1100 meter section, plus one monitoring the PCP intake pressure/temperature. Applications such as this allow ExxonMobil reservoir engineers to study the horizontal formation response, to gain a thorough understanding during different pumping scenarios.
Overall, there are 102 sPOD sensors installed at OCN ExxonMobil field, monitored by a total of 33 eP surface acquisition and data process systems.

CS7X Technology as a Solution for Monitoring and Logging with sPOD Sensors
Through product development, eP has been able to fulfill a request by ExxonMobil to supply an enhanced surface data acquisition system, by incorporating the companies CS7X technology to interface with the sPOD sensor. The new “Well Pad Manager System (WPMS) – sPOD”, will replace all existing surface systems previously commissioned at OCN. This technology improvement will greatly enhance ExxonMobil’s ability to effectively gather well data, control production and historically trend all well pad information.
WPMS with Multi-Point Digital (mPOD) Sensors
The customer has selected eP Solutions to provide the new WPMS with mPOD. The mPOD uses a digitally transmitted signal to facilitate multiple sensor communication on a single conductor subsurface cable. The WPMS – mPOD system allows up to four fully configured PCP wells to be interfaced into a single WPMS. Data processing, trending, communications and control for all wells are facilitated via the WPMS – mPOD.
The technology offered by eP, allows the customer to utilize the same technology for all its well testing functions as well.
