Premier Chestnut Development Project Subsea Control System

The Site

For this development CAC supplied an electro / hydraulic multiplexed subsea control system to be tied back to Brovigs' Crystal Ocean FPSO by means of a 300 meter electro / hydraulic control umbilical. The subsea control module is diver installable.

The Requirement

To supply a diver installable electro / hydraulic subsea control system and associated subsea and topsides equipment to be deployed from the Brovig rds Crystal Ocean FPSO. The requirement was for a multi-use system enabling the vessel to be easily deployable on a global basis and with varied step-out and completion capabilities. Therefore, the system was designed to achieve this maximum flexibility and cost savings.

The Solution

The CAC subsea control system consists of the following equipment.

Subsea Control Module

Designed to be installed by Diver. The Subsea Control Module has been configured to control two subsea wells and has a total of twenty hydraulic functions, two high pressure and eighteen low pressure. All connections are mounted to the side of the module and are locked into place via the bolts mounted to the mounting base. The Subsea Control Module is supplied with a ten liter accumulator on the low pressure supply and ESD valves on all supplies. Both pressure ranges have dual hydraulic supplies which all passes through three-micron filters before reaching the control valves. A strict NAS 6 environment must be maintained within the control system hydraulics.

Master Control Station

For control and monitoring of the subsea wells plus constant monitoring of the I/O systems and processors, all data being relayed back to the graphic interface. Mounted on the FPSO's bridge and consists of two 90-30 GE-Fanuc PLCs running in hot standby. The standard design of the MCS is suitable for safe area and features dedicated dual channel variable power supplies, including fault detection to the subsea electronics module with soft start.

Electrical Power Unit and Uninterruptible Power Supply

Located in the Instrument Room and linked to the MCS via dual RS 485 links communicating using standard Modbus. The EPU consists of dual variable power supplies being controlled and monitored by the MCS via a Genius Bus Interface. Communication and control signals are issued by the PLCs in the MCS to the serial gateways.

Hydraulic Power Unit

The HPU has been designed to control two subsea wells and as such has sufficient accumulation to open and close all subsea tree valves twice before pump recharging would be required. The unit is a fully enclosed, custom fabricated stainless enclosure with main access at one end and subsequently all maintenance procedure will be able to be carried out via this access. All controls and instrumentation from the HPU are fed back to the MCS via discrete terminals for control and data acquisition.

Subsea Umbilical Distribution Unit

The open sea filled chest design SDU is mounted on the tree structure close to the subsea control module and the umbilical has a mounting flange with which it will be bolted to the SDU.

All hydraulic and chemical hoses in the umbilical are to be supplied at the subsea end with minimum of one meter long free ends, terminated into a JIC fitting. The electrical power lines are to have a minimum of two meter flying leads which are to be terminated into Tronic connectors.

Subsea Distribution Unit to Subsea Control Module Jumper Assembly

Consists of five hydraulic and two electrical jumpers terminated at the SDU end into diver mateable mono couplings and connectors.
