Quick Exhaust Valves for Control Systems

The quick exhaust valve is designed for applications where the rapid venting of fluid is desired. An example of such an installation is one in which a long, small diameter tubing run is feeding a valve actuator on a surface safety valve. Normally, opening of the safety valve is not a problem because the air or fluid is fed to the actuator under pressure. It is the closing that can be a problem due to the long line run and because most actuators are single acting with a spring return. The spring systems generate relatively low pressure resulting in long closing times if the fluid has to bleed back through the supply line or air in order to vent. By installing a quick exhaust valve at the actuator, as closely piped as possible, instantaneous venting is assured. Two types of quick exhaust valves are available.

Pneumatic Quick Exhaust Valve for Control Systems

A 316 SS 3-2 day valve with an extra large exhaust orifice, designed to be fitted directly at the inlet port to a pneumatic actuator. It is a three-port valve: one inlet port, one actuator (outlet) port, and a larger exhaust port. When the inlet port is pressurized, the exhaust port is closed by the "flapper", which is a soft material seal, and the inlet port is connected with the outlet port. When pressure fails at the inlet of the quick exhaust valve, the outlet is automatically opened to the exhaust and the actuator is quickly depressurized.

Hydraulic Quick Exhaust Valve for Control Systems

Designed to shift to the closed vent position before the inlet check opens thereby supplying the actuator. The inlet check opens at 50-PSI and the maximum operating pressure of the valve is 10,000-PSI. Porting sizes were selected for ease of installation as well as to minimize pressure drop during operation. Both the outlet and vent ports are 1/2" NPT. The inlet port is 1/4" NPT. The 316 SS valve may be mounted in any position without affecting its operation and pressures as low as 10-PSI will shift the poppet to the vent position. Once shifted, the poppet will not close. As would be true for any hydraulic system, the pump collecting the fluid from the actuator's quick exhaust vent should be located so it does not create back pressure on the actuator during venting.

Sand Probes for Control Systems

Continuous monitoring of the effects of an abrasive product on flowline and valves is possible with the use of the sand probe. A sensing probe of a predetermined thickness extends into the flow path of the abrasive product. When the probe has been cut, indicating a known degree of erosion, the sand probe assembly shifts, blocking and bleeding a control pressure signal. This signal is used to either close a valve or trigger an alarm. The assembly is available for use with either low or high pressure control systems.
