Brisco Wellcon System Technology

Wellcon modern communications and microprocessor technology to provide a secure, fast, multi-drop telemetry system and a flexible input/output capability. The modular system operates using `distributed intelligence' such that each sub-system has access to the telemetry link with the surface.

This allows any combination of sensor inputs and valve control outputs to be provided, merely by adding the appropriate circuit boards.

The superimposed `signal-on-power' communications technology allows reduced umbilical and interface costs.

Subsea Control Module (SCM) The Wellcon SCM is a compact lightweight unit (0.8 x 0.9 x 1.0m @ 1100Kg) which contains all the hydraulic and electronic equipment required to control and monitor a specific subsea completion:

The SCM may incorporate:

  • Up to 24 hydraulic control functions Downhole gauge inputs Single or dual hydraulic supply inputs Battery back-up (if required) Intelligent SEM logic
  • Up to 16 remote sensor inputs pressure, temperature, position, flow, etc)

The Wellcon SCM is configured for installation by diver. Electro-hydraulic maybe diver or Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), mateable, depending upon the water depth, field configuration and client requirements.

The compact modular design and small SCM envelope (750mm x 850mm x 1000mmm high for a typical twenty four function system) makes the Wellcon system a most attractive and competitive solution for new developments and existing system upgrades.

Brisco Subsea Electronics Module (SEM)

The Wellcon SEM includes Power Supply, Input/Output and Communications Modules all seated within a one-atmosphere environment.

The power supply module is supplied with DC power from the topsides Electrical Power Unit (EPU) via the umbilical, Low-voltage DC supplies for the input/output, communications and downhole gauge modules are generated internally.

Each Input/Output (I/O) modules incorporate 16 input and 16 output channels. Each input channel is configured for 4-20mA current loop detectors, providing 12 bit analogue to digital input conversion, line monitoring, configurable scan rates and individually configurable channels.

The module also includes 16 output channels for use with 24VDC loads. Each output channel is provided with 36-watt output drive capability, open and short circuit fault detection, driver fault detection, continuous circuit loop testing, software programmable testing and integral fly back suppression.

Housekeeping facilities are provided through the APB Module.

Flexible communications to third party equipment, such as DHPT sensors, is provided through a dedicated Communications Module.

Local processing capabilities which can be pre-programmed from the surface - allows for simple, repetitive tasks (such as choke setting) to be managed subsea thus reducing umbilical comms traffic.
