Overview of the mPOD2 Multi-Point Digital Sensor

Multi-point digital sensor capable of operating at a varying degree of surface and downhole conditions.eP’s mPOD2 Multi-Point Digital Sensor transmits a proprietary protocol when addressed. Using an addressable scheme allows multiple digital sensors to communicate and be powered on the same, single-conductor line. In addition to transmitting both pressure and temperature data, continuous monitoring of the sensor’s head voltage allows basic diagnostics of cable integrity during the life of the installed system.

Similar to the sPOD Single Point Digital Sensor, data is processed with coefficients generated from a calibration process performed at eP’s manufacturing and test facility. The calibration and verification testing ensures that the sensor meets the accuracy specifications determined for the design.

mPOD2 Multi-Point Digital Sensor Longevity

Sensor operation longevity is well proven with eP’s sensor technology. The overall life expectancy of the conveyed system depends upon many environmental, handling and well bore conditions. eP has considered and allowed for the ever-changing, unpredictability of the specific application by incorporating the following design principals.

Wide Operating Temperature Range

The sensor is capable of operating at a varying degree of surface and downhole conditions.

Repeatability

The sensor output, under pressure and temperature cycling of given input conditions, is the same each time the input conditions are applied.

Stability

Under constant pressure and temperature, the transducer output does not change.

Resistance to Mechanical Shock and Vibration

The sensor produces minimal error during operation and has no long term degradation.

Resistance to Gases and Liquids Produced or Injected Downhole

The sensor is resistant to gases and liquids produced or injected downhole, whether naturally occurring (CO2, brine, H2S) or from well treatment injection (acids, alkalis).

A comprehensive series of environmental stress tests ensure stringent criteria are met for thermal shock, mechanical shock and thermal aging.

Basics of Operation of the mPOD2 Multi-Point Digital Sensor

The Piezo resistive transducer converts a pressure into a change in resistance. The strain of the applied pressure is measured across an active four wire resistive bridge. The temperature is also measured from a secondary of the main bridge.

The purpose of the temperature measurement is to compensate for any temperature induced errors from the output of the pressure transducer.

The design incorporates minimal electronics which in turn decreases the infant mortality rate commonly experienced in other designs.

mPOD2 Multi-Point Digital Sensor Signal Transmission

The digital sensor, using proprietary protocol, returns a signal when addressed with the proper ID. Using an addressable scheme allows for multiple digital sensors to communicate and be powered on the same, single-conductor line. In addition to transmitting both pressure and temperature data, continuous monitoring of the sensors ‘head voltage’ allows for basic diagnostics of cable integrity during the life of the installed equipment.
