Real-Time Optimization Solutions for Oil Field Automation Summary

Benefits of Solutions

  • Increased production
  • Reduced operating costs and well failures
  • Individual well management
  • Efficiency in field operations
  • Efficiency in computer operations and automation

By providing real-time solutions, manual entry capabilities, production operations solutions, and enterprise information management systems, eProduction Solutions allows users to significantly optimize field production.

eP's solutions are designed to complete a cycle of activity to optimize field production operations. The cycle includes a design phase where the user can create the most efficient design for the pump based on the conditions of the well and information from past operations. Once the design is in place, the well must be monitored to assure the design continues to be correct. Analysis provides information that identifies changes in the well, pump, and machinery. If an exception is identified during the monitoring stage, then changes take place through the control features. Eventually, a new artificial lift system needs to be installed and the design phase starts the cycle again with the information gathered by the system.

eProduction Solutions provides much more than a SCADA system. It is an integrated suite of tools that provides the information and advanced analysis needed to operate an oil field optimally. Some of the benefits of the integrated suite approach are:

  1. Single system: The different components of the solution are integrated to provide seamless functionality for complete field requirements. Field personnel do not have to maintain different systems for the various components of the field. Since the components that make up the solution are all from the same company, maintenance and support issues are greatly simplified.
  2. Advanced functionality: The seamless integration of the components results in very powerful functionality. For example, the desktop software calculates and downloads the sequence of the well tests into the RTU. In case of communications failure, the facility RTU is capable of operating independently without any communication from the host.
  3. Simplified data management: Since the modules are integrated into one solution, it significantly simplifies data management functions. For example, the production module automatically uses the well test data and data from the rest of the modules to perform daily shrinkage analysis and individual well production allocations.

There is no requirement for building data migration schemes from one application to another.

The solution allows existing systems to be incorporated into the new solution. The solution is able to gather data and control wells and facilities over one radio frequency although it may be using several different communication protocols.

Emerging Technologies

Burgess Briar, PRAP Project Manager
"I think a long term relationship with EPS would be the best bet. Frankly, I think their operating style—100% responsible, team players—and their strong knowledge of the field of petroleum engineering are their most important qualifications. I am sure their products are more or less as good as anyone else's—maybe superior—but as long as they function effectively the technology is less important than the ability to integrate that technology into your scope of supply."

EPS Software Training and Consulting

For over 20 years, eP has been delivering engineering software solutions, consulting and training to exploration and production companies world-wide. Application of sound engineering principles leveraged by powerful technology is the key to the AIM -GAIN-SUSTAIN ™ process for production optimization. Now proven around the world, the three-stage process automates daily production engineering tasks formerly performed manually.

The AIM (Asset Inspection Methodology) phase defines and prioritizes asset opportunities and builds a business case for implementation. During the GAIN phase, well and surface network models are built and recommendations are made to increase uptime and improve deliverability. At its heart is the i-DO intelligent online daily operations system that continuously optimizes well and surface network parameters to improve asset performance and deliver early paybacks.

The production increase in the AIM and GAIN phases funds the SUSTAIN stage, where new production optimization technology is implemented, processes are fine-tuned, and people are trained to sustain profitability over the asset's life.

Red Eye 2G Water-Cut Meter

The 2G Water-Cut Meter uses unique infrared technology to deliver extremely accurate oil/water cut data. It delivers the needed performance under actual production conditions, not just ideal laboratory conditions. This innovative product negates the gas, salinity, and safety issues typically encountered with in-line meter systems.

The measurement is based on simultaneously measuring multiple wavelengths that include both water and oil absorbent peaks. Scattering effects caused by emulsions, sand, or gas bubbles have the same effect at all wavelengths and as such can be nullified.

The meter can be used alone to measure and report instantaneous water cut; in conjunction with a companion net oil computer to perform timed production well tests; or as part of the REMMS system.

When a reliable three-phase meter is required to assure successful production management the innovative and novel eP REMMS System offers an easily transportable, power efficient, small footprint, lower-cost alternative to traditional metering systems.

Reservoir Monitoring

eP/Weatherford's single-line optical systems deliver real-time measurements in flow, pressure, temperature, distributed temperature, and 4-D time lapse seismic applications. These accurate and timely measurements enable improved decision making and subsequent enhancements to production and reservoir management.

The single-line optical solutions offer:

  • An ability to commingle production for multiple zones when incorporated within an intelligent completion
  • The real-time identification and localization of production anomalies
  • Fundamental physics-based measurements

In addition, industry leading levels of performance as a result of:

  • Completely passive sensors with no downhole electronics or moving parts
  • 100% optical sensors with no optical windows or sensors exposed to well fluids
  • Sensors that are intrinsically safe and do not require electrical energy or nuclear sources

LOWIS

LOWIS is a web-based, enterprise-wide, well management software suite designed to help improve the bottom line for any oil and gas production operation. By reducing lifting costs, optimizing work flows, and managing the financial risk associated with the evolution of new technologies, LOWIS can help companies better achieve their financial goals and objectives.

To successfully manage today's upstream oil and gas production operations, various individuals within an organization must collaborate effectively on a variety of important tasks. Throughout the life cycle of a well, these multi-disciplinary tasks range from planning and executing to results evaluation and process improvement.

Achieving productivity gains in this complex, interdependent environment requires timely sharing of reported data, calculated results, analytical findings, and expert observations. Critical information is often fragmented and dispersed across the enterprise, hindering an organization's efforts at collaboration. Use of LOWIS facilitates proficient, cooperative interaction between people, and more effective production work flow processes.
